What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)?

EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach that enhances conventional therapy. It helps to stimulate growth and development for all individuals, families, and/or groups that have the desire to grow emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. EAP is client-based therapy that provides a hands-on opportunity to experience new solutions and tools for effectively managing an individual’s internal happiness.

EAP is an emerging field in which horses are used as a tool for emotional growth and learning. EAP is experimental in nature. This means that the participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horse, then processing (discussing) feelings, behaviors, and patterns.

The focus is not riding or horsemanship. In fact, 100% of EAP takes place on the ground. The focus on EAP involves setting up activities involving the horse, which will require the client or group to apply certain skills. Nonverbal communications, assertiveness, teamwork, relationships, confidence, and attitude are several examples of the tools utilized and developed by EAP.

EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, families, and groups. EAP addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs, including behavioral issues, attention deficit disorder, substance abuse, eating disorders, abuse issues, trauma issues, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and communication needs.

Fact Sheet

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) in the Field

75% of clients (mental health, dual diagnosis, chemical dependency) begin to immediately utilize the new skills and tools learned by personal awareness during EAP activities when attended at least x2 to x2 weekly.

96% of EAP Clients are dramatically affected by their new insights, which affect perception only through personal experience in EAP.

The process of Change, regarding behavioral modifications, Effective Communication, and Emotional growth, happened at different rates depending on the individual. However, the process is noticeably faster than conventional therapy alone. Change can occur in months rather than years. (Clinicians are also provided with insight in a shorter period of time.)

100% of the time, a more accurate assessment is made available within the first 3 sessions in EAP. This is extremely valuable to the treatment facilities and other mental health professionals in building a complete and thorough treatment plan for their clients. Some issues and pathologies may not present themselves for several months and/or years during conventional therapy alone; however, with EAP, the self-discovery, observation, and documentation of these issues are complete in days and/or weeks.

The success rate of long-term recovery in treatment facilities and in private practice is exceeded by more than 45% (Seacliff Recovery Center in Huntington Beach, CA, and Harmony in Malibu, CA [2001-2003]) with the added component of EAP.

Individuals and groups alike become aware of core issues in their lives, which affect their overall happiness and/or recovery process. Through these clarities and with this unique yet powerful experimental therapy, the clients improve their personal growth and development. Of course, the EAP team (therapist, horse professional, and therapy horse) assist with this process along with observation, feedback, and through stimulating questions.

More than 95% of mental health professionals change the way they communicate with their clients, verbally and non-verbally, during interventions and office sessions after they are exposed to basic EAP concepts
