Equine Assisted Phychotherapy (EAP)

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) – School-Based Program

About EAP
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is a powerful, hands-on therapeutic approach that complements traditional talk therapy. It supports emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual growth for individuals, families, and groups. Grounded in experiential learning, EAP helps clients discover practical tools for managing emotions, building self-awareness, and navigating life’s challenges.

What sets EAP apart is the inclusion of horses as part of the therapeutic team. All work is done on the ground—there is no riding. Horses, known for their sensitivity and intuition, respond to human behavior and emotion in the moment, providing immediate feedback without judgment. This creates a safe and natural space for growth, healing, and transformation.

Why It Works
EAP allows clients to:

  • Experience self-awareness, insight, and emotional regulation in real time
  • Build trust, confidence, and communication skills
  • Explore new ways of thinking, behaving, and problem-solving
  • Heal from trauma in a safe, non-verbal, and non-judgmental environment

The Eagala Model
At Healing Trails, we follow the Eagala Model, a structured, team-based approach to EAP. This model involves a licensed mental health professional, an equine specialist, and the horse(s) as equal partners. The work is entirely ground-based, allowing clients to interact with horses freely without pressure or interpretation from others.

This model is particularly effective in reaching areas that traditional talk therapy may not, especially with children and teens. Clients are encouraged to find their own solutions, empowering them to become the expert in their own life.

Who It Helps
Our school-based EAP programs benefit:

  • Youth with emotional and behavioral challenges
  • Children on the autism spectrum
  • Students affected by trauma, bullying, or family instability
  • Those struggling with anxiety, depression, or social skills

Our Philosophy
We believe everyone has the innate ability to heal and grow. Our role is to provide a supportive space and skilled guidance that helps students connect with their own inner strengths. Through EAP, young people build resilience, confidence, and the tools they need to thrive—both in school and in life.
